What is Southwestness?

Southwestness (fka Things in Light) reports on art, cannabis, compassion, culture, nature, resilience, style + wellness in the high desert known as New Mexico. Our Remote Viewing calendar promotes virtual + socially distanced events that align with our listen / learn / love / resist mission.

🔗⚒️ American policing has its roots in white, male landowners banding together to search for runaway slaves. When we here at @southwestness chant “abolition not reform,” we are rejecting the notion that it’s possible to fix a system that emerged from an actual American horror story and which continues to be supported by our country’s settler colonialist and white supremacist legacies. We deny the legitimacy of organizations that prioritize the protection of property above all else, including safeguarding human life and wellness. We refuse to fear our neighbors or to embrace nihilism. A world without policing is possible and @southwestness supports an abolitionist path that begins with the defunding of police departments and the redirection of those funds toward supportive housing and provisions for education, medical care and mental health services, including evidence-based addiction treatment. 🔗⚒️

🎤🕯️💄 On April 16, aka Selenamas—a holiday that commemorates the birthday of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995)—@southwestness celebrates a brilliant flame whose life was violently extinguished far too young, who is now enshrined in perpetuity as the queen of Tejano music. By all accounts, Selena was kind, especially to animals, and her talent, style, generosity and work ethic made her a creative force to be reckoned with. This Selenamas, get inspired by her iconic style, as captured in these photos of Quintanilla-Pérez in 1992 (taken by John Dyer for Más magazine) and, of course, by listening to her solo albums: Selena (1989), Ven Conmigo (1990), Entre a Mi Mundo (1992), Amor Prohibido (1994) and Dreaming of You (1995). Rest in power, Selena. ⚰️ You are still missed here on Earth. 🎤🕯️💄

🌼 A @southwestness National Garden Month pro-tip 🌼 Connecting with nature doesn't require extensive botanical knowledge, fancy equipment or a green thumb. Instead, simply wander around your yard or 'hood with an eye toward the earth and get to know a plant. We found this clump of fleabane—possibly Erigeron concinnus aka Navajo fleabane, tidy fleabane and hairy daisy?—growing in our downtown Albuquerque yard and spent some time getting to know this sunny wildflower. How are y'all celebrating National Garden Month?
